How to clean memory on a MacBook: first check RAM or storage
A search for “good Mac memory cleaner” can mean two different things: freeing disk space or dealing with memory used by running apps. The first step is to identify which resource is under pressure.
Storage and memory are different
Storage on your SSD keeps applications, documents and other files between restarts. RAM is working memory used by applications while they run. Deleting a large video creates disk space; it does not add RAM. Closing a demanding application may reduce its memory use; it does not remove your stored documents.
If your startup disk is almost full
Open System Settings → General → Storage. Review the largest categories and files. DiskPearl helps with this problem: its free scan maps stored folders and highlights System Data. The paid licence adds reviewed cleaning actions, duplicate detection and application leftovers. DiskPearl is a disk cleaner and analyser; it does not purge RAM.
If applications run out of memory
Open Activity Monitor → Memory. Look at the Memory Pressure graph rather than assuming that a low amount of unused RAM means a problem. macOS uses available memory for cached files and manages compressed memory. Activity Monitor also shows app memory and swap usage, which can help you understand the load.
What to try before installing a memory cleaner
Save your work, close applications you do not need and reduce a heavy browser session. Look for an application whose memory use grows during your usual task. If an app repeatedly causes trouble, check for its updates and test whether the same task reproduces the problem. Quit normally first; forcing an app to quit can lose unsaved work. A restart may help you diagnose a temporary problem, but it does not increase the Mac’s installed RAM.
Which tool fits your situation?
For a full disk or unexplained System Data, try a storage scan. For pressure from running applications, start with Activity Monitor and the application concerned. If your workload consistently exceeds the Mac’s memory capacity, deleting stored files will not solve that capacity limit. Choose a tool for the diagnosed problem rather than a claim that it can make every Mac faster.
Common questions
Does DiskPearl clean RAM?
No. DiskPearl scans and helps clean disk storage. It does not purge RAM or close your applications to reduce memory use.
Is cached memory necessarily wasted?
No. macOS can use available RAM for cached files. Examine memory pressure and your actual workload before treating cached memory as a problem.
Can a full disk and memory pressure happen together?
Yes. They are separate observations, so investigate both storage usage and running applications.
